I pulled around back just after 5:30. The cover of the darkness before dawn, hidden almost everything, except, of course, the stone house covered with ivy in my youth. That in which my mother old but beautiful still lives. Nothing could hide. This is where the five of us grew up. Only my brother and I still call our house home town, and neither one of us is returned until we were well into their thirties. Before that, my brothers and sisters and I were distributed throughout the country. Atlanta, Seattle, New Orleans, Dalton, GA, and Oakland, MN - evidence of a geographical undeniable fact: we have never been a very cohesive unit.
Yet we have always done our best. Since my arrival 5:30 attest.
Growing up, I was not exactly certain what happened as "normal" if I was damn sure that our families are not eligible. We were a mixed group created when a widow with a young son and daughter married a widower with two young daughters. I arrived three years later when Mom and Dad were both 42. Old, no doubt, to have a child today, but downright ancient in 1969. I was the only family member who was related to everyone - our common denominator, if you want.But I was much younger than the other four, and as such would never be the galvanizing force that you might expect from such a common denominator to be. Not that the galvanizing was never in the cards for us.
